Creating Time and Space to Read for Enjoyment
Reading or listening to an audiobook not only helps the kids reset after a busy recess, but also opens pathways to engage imagination and empathy. We assume that our students read at home but also want to make space at school to build healthy reading habits. The kids have a choice to alternate between reading written text or listen to stories for the first 10-15 minutes of class. I’ve got to tell you, it’s a magical time! I see smiles, hear giggles and see frowns of concentration during this time. Often they beg for more time and some have even come in at lunch to take their books out on the playground. Next month, we will talk about writing a Book Review and all the creative ways to approach this.
You can support this by creating space and time for reading for the entire family. Make visiting the library a regular thing. Many families have success in setting aside quiet family reading time at night where parents and kids read for enjoyment. Show them that you enjoy reading and have your own book talks together. It’s a great alternative to electronic choices. Reading is a wonderful reset for all of us, adults and kids alike!
