Our first unit of study in the fifth-sixth grade is a measurement and data unit. It includes practicing the measurement of length, weight, and volume using both customary and metric units. We have calculated the perimeter and area of flat rectangular polygons on paper and on campus (like the ping pong table and badminton court) and are starting to practice conversions between customary and metric units. After cooking for the Harvest Festival and doing our apple investigation, I will be introducing the concept of the volume of cubes and other rectangular prisms.

Here students are designing a room and calculating the perimeter of items they have placed in their rooms.
