Art

Happy New Year! It’s good to be back at school after a wonderful winter break.

For the month of January we’ve only had one day in the art room together. We’ve had two Mondays off this month and Rosy has to sub for me one Monday as well. Luckily, I subbed in the Tile room one day and squeezed in another day of Art with the kids.
For the time we were together we experimented with Contour Line drawing, Blind Contour drawing as well as Continuous Line drawing. Along with studying the subject drawn, practicing patience and trying hard to not peek at your paper or not lifting your pencil, we discussed scale and efficiently using the space your canvas offers. They also had a chance to sketch a portrait of ME!!! They thought the outcomes were funny, questionable even, and were not convinced that the sketches are supposed to look funny, a bit skewed and very abstract!

Still Life

Last week we gathered produce from the lunch hut and arranged it until satisfactory to attempt a quick still life activity. Again, we talked about scale and to just “draw what you see” while considering angles, shadows, dimension and highlights. The kids started with contour lines then filled in the best they could with acrylic paints and in one class period!

These kids make magnificent art!

Next up: auction art, doodle for google and African American artists in honor of Black history month.

One more thing!! We celebrated Chinese New Year by completing a step by step drawing of a cute mouse under a cherry blossom tree created with Sumi ink. The Chinese character for “Rat” was also practiced.
