Week after break
I mean, whoa! How cool did these turn out? Winter art coming soon, I promise!
Well, I must begin by acknowledging the beautiful weather we’ve been super lucky to have these days. We’re almost at the end of this unforgettable year and we are in short sleeves by second period! The field is in full sun from 9:30-2:30 so I’m happy to report we are very comfortable in our outdoor learning environment thus far. Yes, I just knocked on wood after writing that.
It’s great to be back! We dove back in with a fun project on Native Americans in social studies. The students paired up to co-create a travelers brochure for a specific region/territory as they study up on culture, food, lifestyle, as well as environment and climate of assigned regions. The kids also enjoyed a challenging art project of an impression of Pacific northwestern native art using Black and red markers on white paper.
Spelling words and first spelling quiz!
The kids had their first round of spelling words to study and took a quiz on Friday. Erica created the first list of words from words used most often in writing letters (penpal writing has become a favorite) and some from social studies.
In math, lessons on lines, segments, angles and rays. The kids toured campus to locate, identify and draw up angles they noticed around them. Angles are everywhere!!
In art class, we were so inspired by angles, we created far out cityscapes with “wonky” skies and suns using angles to draw up three dimensional buildings. The artists used more of their painted paper for the buildings. Adding parallelogram windows were tricky!!!!
In leadership we took care of some yard work and collected all the bird feeders around campus…so many ideas on how we will paint and relocate them is swirling around. This will be a fun project.
We received a very nice response from Manila about our proposal created at our student council meeting. Spirit days will be added to the calendar soon! We hope the whole school participates and enjoys the selection created by our class.
Weaving our handmade looms has finally begun. These are going to turn out amazing! So far they are adding so much inspiration and color to our little supply room/garden shed. Hopefully these will be (mostly) complete to take home before the holidays. Yay!
Speaking of the holidays….Erica and I decided to involve the kids with some charity work this season. We will be asking for clothing and book donations for Hopes Closet, a great local, nonprofit organization that supports kids in the local foster care system. More on this project ASAP!! We will get the kids to create flyers to take home as well as help with organization once donations come in. We may even need a parent volunteer (Or two) to deliver our collection. (May be a fun experience for the kids to take part in as well!)

Here are the requirements for donations:
NO ADULT CLOTHES OR SHOES
Children's clothes size 0-14/16
They are full on baby sizes up to 12 months
New and like new clothes
freshly washed and folded
free of stains, holes, etc.
put into a white trash bag
Always need: new kids socks and underwear

Thank you so much for having incredible kids. The class continues to flow with positive energy as we navigate this day to day experience on campus. They cooperate and communicate well. It’s a joy to be with them.
