We entered the month of February with designing an image on a skateboard deck. The intention behind this project was an ode to Transportation day, which was scheduled later that week. Alas, the weather was rather rainy (to put it lightly) and Transportation day has been rescheduled for a less muddy date.
Valentines Day HeArt with oil pastel and etching.
To create these hearts, the students chose a light colored oil pastel and created a border with oil pastel. drew a small heart within another heart, and so on until it hit the border. Next, they added another layer of oil pastels (this time in dark tones) to completely cover their whole piece, but still presenting the Hearts and Border. You all still with me? Lol. Lastly, the students etched with bamboo screens to outline the border and hearts and to add lots of detail using Line, shapes and patterns.
Doodle For Google
For a few weeks now the majority of the class has worked very hard on their entries for the Doodle for Google contest held by Google. Kids enter from all over the nation by creating their own Google logo with the theme “When I grow up, I hope....”. This opened up many discussions on what we can do as a humane race to better the conditions of our Earth to equality, peace, more love and healthcare for all. They were inspired, they had many ideas, they had their hands on many mediums to choose from and for a few weeks created beautiful entries along with heartfelt descriptions of their artwork. Job well done, artists. I wish them all the luck in the universe. * pictures coming soon!
Circus time! We’ve been having class in the Tile room so this week we are going to keep it light and experiment with Sumi-e ink, focusing on brushstrokes, tone, using ink and it’s wash only( it becomes like a light grey ink). We’ll get zen like for some “out breath” classes after a very busy time in the school year (science fair, circus, doodle for google, their bake sale, trip to point Reyes) and before spring break. These kids are rock stars. I love working with them.
