Happy November!  

Well, we didn’t actually get to monochromatic and tints/shades just yet. This past month flew by! The kids were mostly busy creating the fantastically, scary haunted Willows, making props and signs, eyeballs and ghosts. They also enjoyed a class with a substitute teacher, Debbie Wu. She guided them in making cool “Dia de Los muertos” inspired masks. In One class class the kids made big Marigolds (cempazuchitl en Espanol) out of orange tissue paper to use as decorations for our Dia Del Los muertos Alter we created last Friday.  

Our main subject, aside from Holiday creations, was to review *Lines, Patterns and Shapes, all the variations, combinations and usage to create texture, tone and overall unique pieces of art.

 After a solid practice with a homemade worksheet, I had the kids create a multilayered landscape with ink and chalk pastel. We began by creating a border around our canvas by taping down the perimeter with masking tape and then taken off after the masterpieces were complete. This helps the viewer focus on the center of art piece, also gives the art a nice professional look.  I had them fill in each layer with beautiful patterns and shapes with fine tip sharpies. To add color, I demonstrated how to blend different colors, how to simply dab in color in a few areas to create lighter tones and how to make bold and bright shades by filling in with more chalk. These turned out awesome!! Vibrant and sharp, yet soft and dreamy.
