Welcome to a new year in the art room! It is always exciting to start a new school year creating with the talented and unique students, old and new.
Before I begin, I would like to apologize for my infrequent presence this first month at school. In the first week of August, I was diagnosed with stage 1 Breast Cancer. It’s been the most challenging obstacle I’ve ever faced in my life! I was scheduled for my first surgery to remove tumor on September 13th. It was successful and the recovery time was restful and speedy, considering! They tested a few lymph nodes they removed and cancer was not present so I’m grateful to announce that I will not have to endure Chemo. However, I have another surgery scheduled this month, on the 11th, for the doctor to remove a little bit more tissue for safe measure. I will have to take off some more time off to allow myself the proper time to heal, again. I will be back in the classroom for Leadership on the 19th!! Hopefully, I’ll be back at work in full swing because there’s nothing more I enjoy than making art with your kids. I want to thank the teachers and subs for the support during my time in need. Thank you for letting me share. Know that all is well and I’ll be back in the classroom stronger and more inspired than ever!
That being said, I have little to share this first month in the Art room. The first day we discussed guidelines and took a tour of the classroom. We also got the creative juices flowing by illustrating a favorite memory from summer vacation.
Last Monday I was able to come teach for the day, which I was grateful for so I was scheduled to start on a later date! I was so happy to return to start helping with the Harvest Festival planning. We created lovely banners to welcome our families to the festivities. And began to decorate the covers of our new art journals. These journals will be a place to take notes, practice techniques and to use as a reference when making art. The covers themselves are their first canvases that will incorporate layers of different mediums to create a multidimensional masterpieces. When these journals are filled, I hope to create another art journal made from recycled materials that will be used for free drawings and expressions. These usually go home at the end of the year or when they are filled up!
Another project we tackled was the creation and completion of the Harvest Festival cook books that are gifted to the families at the event. These cook books are collectively made by all the students at Orchard. After all, it takes a lot of effort and many hands to create, edit, illustrate and decorate a cook book in two days!
When I come back from my next leave of absence, we will study monochromatic, tints and shades. We will also get into some Halloween inspired art projects and hopefully help make the Haunted Willows spookier than ever.
