In 4th, 5th and 6th grade science, we spent our first month getting to know each other, and each student created an “About Me” bat to contribute to our class tree.  I have been enjoying getting to know all the students and I am enjoying all their unique insights that they bring to our class each day!

In reflection of our Beach Clean Up Day, students learned about how long it takes for different materials to break down, and how much plastic is in our oceans.  Our class then analyzed and graphed the data from our clean up and reflected on how they can help reduce the amount of waste created.

Also this month, students are participating in a variety of activities to explore food webs and gain a basic understanding of how nutrients are cycled through them.  In addition to learning about the living organisms in an ecosystem, an overall theme in our classroom is the four elements that all living things need: soil, sun, water, and air; which will be woven into many of our labs and activities.

For our first engineering challenge, students considered the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and worked with a partner to design a latch for the Three Bears’ door that would have prevented the whole break in from occurring.
