Hi everyone, I hope you are well. I am so lucky because I get to see these students often during our zoom sessions and I enjoy their connection and sense of humor.

This week, 2nd graders worked on a Grid and Graph It exercise and now each student should be at the same point in order for us to complete it next week. We were joined by Marla and practiced the cup song. We will try to learn the end of it next week. I am finding it difficult for my body and brain. I read the Dr. Seuss story, The Sneetches, to remind us to be accepting and open and not to judge by appearances. We also learned how to make fact family houses and I am hoping that the students continue to work on theirs between now and next session. The fact family house reinforces the idea of the turnaround fact 5+2=7 and 2+5=7 as well as the relationship between addition and subtraction: If 5+2=7, then 7-5=2. Also, that the 3 numbers are bound together through these four facts 5+2=7, 2+5=7, 7-5=2, 7-2=5. Students can challenge themselves through the facts that they choose, 1, 342+512=1,854 and so on.

For this week's curriculum packet, I have included two copies of the place value worksheet, a game called Reach 5,000 which reinforces column addition and place value, the next Colouring Conundrum, and colored construction paper for fraction kits. Please ensure your child has the envelope ready for our next zoom session, or if they are not participating online, follow instructions to complete at home.

During 3rd grade zoom sesssions, I have been starting by reading aloud Cornelia Funke's novel, Dragon Rider. It helps to get students settled and focused and it is a wonderful story that we had begun in class. This last week, I led students through the steps of creating fortune teller aka cootie catchers. My goal is that they would write multiplication facts on them and use them to practice. We also discussed multiplication shortcuts or tricks that students use. Here is a photo of what I wrote down on the whiteboard as students spoke.

I hope everyone is continuing to practice multiplication facts, repetition is key in memorization for most students. We will switch gears a little bit over the next zoom session and create our fraction kits together, using the colored construction paper I placed in student packets. Students should have these handy for Friday's session.

In this past week's packet I included:

A sheet called Multiplication Made Easy from the Nimble with Numbers series. It is just included for you and your student to look over.

A Colouring Conundrum from This Is Not a Maths Book, an English book which incorporates geometry, logic, art, and much more.

Seeking Sums Practice 1 - I went over this with some students during our study session. The idea is to create the target number using the four numbers provided. You can find as many ways as possible and incorporate different math strategies.
