Math
2nd graders, I continue to enjoy our zoom sessions together. This past week, we tried the breakout rooms for the first time in which students either worked on trying to create a square using their homemade pentominoes or finished creating their set of pentominoes. Thank you to parents for supporting their children in these sessions and projects. My goal is to keep these students thinking and problem solving, to encourage them to complete tasks and persevere. The pentomino challenge is not easy and I encourage families to work on them together. The first time I solved it was two weeks ago with my son, Oliver, who attended Orchard and just turned 19. I also included a new to the students Place Value sheet and a Coloring Conundrum. We did not get to Grid and Graph It this past session so we will complete it next session. Please feel free to send me copies of completed work or return to school. This past week's curriculum can be downloaded here. And Marla joined us for our session and we began to learn the cup song. There are two videos she shared with me. One is an easy tutorial for learning the song, and the other is a video of a school community performing the song. Click on the links for the students and practice prior to Thursday.
Enjoy the sun!
3rd grade, I am also really enjoying seeing you every week. Your sense of humor and creativity is inspiring. I am glad that we have a chance to share Dragon Rider weekly as well. This week, I included a dragon coloring sheet in your curriculum packets. There are also Number 4 multiplication coloring sheets. Some students worked on them during our study session and Sadie's brother, Mickey, saw hers and is inspired to join us and has requested one. You received the weekly challenges and big news - we have two one dollar words so far: excellent (Leif), toilets (Riley); keep searching. Please share them with the class as you find them. I also included a calculator activity entitled Numbers You Gotta Love Em which Leif solved prior to our study session and stated that he had discovered a pattern. Work on memorizing x 6 and keep thinking, joking, solving, creating. You may download packet here. See you next week.
