Science this month has mainly been dedicated to studying what is in the sky.  Our class did a variety of sun related activities, such as measuring and recording the length of our shadows and the sun’s location at different times of day.

Each student created an individual sundial by marking the shadow of their straw (gnomon) at different hours throughout the day.  As a group, we also built a large sundial next to the Tile Room. Some of the class’s favorite games during this unit have been Shadow Tag, and The Hot Sun.

Currently, our class is exploring stars (in addition to our sun) and constellations. Our class learned about a few of the different cultures that created constellations and myths, and then students were given the task to design their own constellations.  Each student named their constellation, painted it, and developed a myth that they told the class. At home you can ask your child about their constellation's name and the story of why it was put into the sky. For added fun, you can also ask them to tell you the story of Cassiopeia or sing you part of the sun song.

In celebration of Earth Day, our class made beautiful sun catchers out of recycled jar lids and plants that we gathered around our campus.  

Also in April, Each class watched a movie about how coyotes have adapted to live near humans in areas such as San Francisco.  Then our class had an exciting visit from Native Animal Rescue. Thank you to Kenza for organizing both of these exciting opportunities!
