The autumn season is always a great time to focus on warm and cool colors. The students created a beautiful forest of warm colored foliage with a cool and crisp sky behind. Blending colors was the primary technique using a dabbing motion with flat tip brushes. The challenge was to not over blend so the viewer sees all the colors used to present the depth of the forest. Lastly the kids used oil pastels, a tint and a shade, to add value to the trunks.
These came out beautifully.
We continued the following week reviewing Color: the wheel, complimentary, primary and secondary with a handmade worksheet. The kids wanted to do a step by step on how to draw a bat, so with cool colors in mind and with the Halloween spirit in the air, the kids used watercolor to add color to their bats flying through a starry night.

The kids also had the opportunity to enter a design contest held by the Santa Cruz Library. The winner of the contest will have their design on the 2020 library card! We’ll find out who wins on December 1st.
