This month the first and second graders continued their explorations of different tools and techniques used for measurement. The students folded paper airplanes, then measured and recorded the distance that they flew.
Partner groups practiced measuring the volume of liquids and solids to make play dough, which they formed into snakes, and then measured their length.
In celebration of Bat Awareness Week, students participated in bat trivia, made bat hats, and played a fun echolocation game called Bat and Moth. The highlight was a bat STEAM challenge in which each student engineered a bat that could fly.
On Halloween, lab teams dissolved candy corn in different liquids to test their guesses, and practiced drawing observations. We also colored bat masks!
Currently: Students are learning about the bat life cycle, and comparing bats to owls.
Coming up: Our class will be learning more about mammals and birds, nocturnal animals, and dissecting owl pellets (thank you Jamey’s family for the donation!!). The class will also be participating in several investigations using microscopes.
