Language Arts

November is here! As we promised, homework is here, too! We realize that this is a new system, and expect that it may take some time to perfect. For the homework, your child will be bringing home a Reading Log every Monday. We encourage first graders to complete one or more entries per week. Second graders are welcome to do two or more entries per week. Please see the inside of the front cover for ways to describe the book, and the inside of the back cover for the writing prompt.

For the first entry, we read In November, by Cynthia Rylant, in class to model an example. Students started their entry in class and drew a picture to help remind them what they would be writing about this week. Please help your child complete this entry at home, and feel free to complete additional entries as well. Please have your child do the writing themselves (with your help), and then sign the signature line at the bottom. Invented spelling for the responses is just fine!

Going forward, your child will be doing the reading at home to complete the entry. Feel free to use books that you have at home, or you may borrow one from the classroom library. We will be introducing a book sign out system to the students. If a student takes a book home on Monday, they will need to return in on Thursday in their folder. Please feel free to reach out with any questions!

This Thursday, you will find a folder with your child’s completed work and the November newsletter in your parent cubby. Please have your child share their hard work with you!
