MUSIC

The second graders have had a very industrious month!  We have been busy preparing for our Spring Concert to be held on June 8, alongside the graduation ceremony.  The students have chosen familiar nursery rhymes that we then composed a jazzy melody to, set in the format of a 12-bar blues.  The students took this project one step further and created little skits to act out the nursery rhymes.  Very ambitious, however, the kids are thoroughly engaged and very excited about this project, as it has come entirely from them, even down to the choosing of costumes.  We are also mastering an ensemble piece entitled, "Cookie Jar."  The kids are honing their ability to swing a rhythm, as this song is also based upon a 12-bar blues format.  Some kids have chosen to solo with either a voice or an instrument.  Children are learning when to take the lead and when to play a support role.  Their musicality has grown greatly over the course of the school year.
