We had a wonderful time in the Art room this past April. Every class was dedicated to creating with recycled materials in celebration of Earth day (everyday!).

The message and practice with each project was a reminder of this: Being mindful of how we use the materials we have, to invite extra creativity by using materials that are mostly considered trash, and most importantly, to honor the earth by creating less waste when we reuse materials.

Our first class was spent creating a classic earth day project: A collage with cut out images from magazines.  The paper that the collages were made on were these old first printed (forest themed) sheets of paper that I found deep in the abyss of materials that live in the art room.  The instructions were to find three plants or flowers and three animals. The challenge was to either find the word “Earth” or the letters that spelled Earth. 

An extra challenge was offered to find your name or the letters of your name! I think these came out great!  

I want to use this platform to give a shout out to Kerry (Elena’s Mom) for helping out at every week at art class. This is her second year being a class helper and it’s been amazing to have her help and presence.  For some time now Kerry has been bringing in fun books from their families library to read to the kids while I finish setting up. Their favorites have been reading books from the “Skippyjon Jones” series where they’ve even figured out this whole clapping part(kinda hard to explain! But the kids have fun and lots of laughs. Everyone has loved this flow, books and reading time has been a positive way for this class to transition from lunch>recess> to art time.

 For the last project of the month, the artists made a simple collage of a cat created with magazine pages. This collage was different because they traced specific shapes out of the magazine pages in order to create an image of a cat with the cut out shapes. It was another good practice for their scissor skills.   Again, these proved to make unique pieces of artwork. Using recycled materials is a creative way to make a piece of art that is close to impossible to recreate.

In May we will cover as many Artists as we can! From classic to the current artists worldwide, we will cover their techniques and most famous art masterpieces.

Matisse, Georgia Okeeffe, Georges Seurat, Kris D, Patrick Dougherty, to name a few!!! I’m very excited to share some of the greatest inspirations  with your kids.
