The circus came to town! In a blaze of talent and comic relief, the students shined on stage and under the sun to deliver another mini tour of wonderful shows.  It was a treat to see our kids show off their talent and skill.

During the week of final circus prep and rehearsal I had the kids do a step by step portrait of an Owl using chalk pastels.  I offered guidance by showing them a few techniques on the different ways you can blend, shade, as well as adding detail and layering. They came out wonderful.

It’s almost Springtime!

The week after the performances I had the kids do something they really enjoy: blowing ink with straws to create a plum blossom tree.  After receiving a few drops of black ink on paper, the kids used the pointy end of a bamboo skewer to “connect the dots” of wet ink.  The next step is the most fun: using a short straw to blow the ink in the most unexpected ways to create the branches. Lastly, using the blunt end of the bamboo skewer dipped in paint, the kids used pointillism to create the blossoms.

Last week I had the kids cut slits across a sheet of green construction paper for a fun paper weaving creation. Each student received four paper snakes to design and decorate.  Once that step was complete, the kids made the snakes “slither thru the grass” by doing a basket weave with their sheet of cut paper.  We had a few challenges (weaving can be hard!) but overall had a fun time giving the snakes some personality (imagine curly eyelashes to camouflage print;) and having breakthroughs with weaving.

Today was our last art class until we meet again after Spring Break.  Earlier this week I asked Jane what she would like to do in art class this week and she suggested drawing a cat in a field of flowers. I loved her idea and appreciated her inspiration so I led the kids thru a step by step on how to draw a cat AND added a step by step on how to draw a bunny (because Easter is on Sunday) on a field with flowers and Easter eggs.  The outlines were created with pencil and then finished their masterpieces with watercolor.

🌸All artwork will be in cubbies by Friday    to be available to take home before the break. 🌸

Have a a wonderful Spring break! Make art! 🦋
