October was an exciting month in first grade science! The seeds that the students planted and are caring for are growing taller.  Students are measuring, and recording their plants’ growth as they learn about the plant life cycle.

We continued our study of plants with a lab related to each plant part (stems, roots, leaves, flowers, seeds, fruits).  For example, to test a stem’s ability to carry water to the leaves, we placed stalks of celery in colorful water and observed them the next day.  

Students learned why leaves change color in the fall and we used chromatography to show us what other colors are hidden in a variety of green leaves.  Students also collected a variety of fallen leaves and made leaf rubbings.

We ended October with some Halloween chemistry fun.  Students made baking soda pumpkins and watched a gas being released while they were squirted with vinegar.   Students also wrote secret ghost messages to each other that are only visible with a black light.

Last week we took a trip to Grey Bears Recycling Center and learned about the different materials that are recycled, how much recycling is processed at the center, and how  Grey Bears helps the community by delivering bags of groceries to seniors.

Coming up in November:  Students are currently learning about different animal habitats. After that we will learn about dinosaurs and fossils as we prepare for our presentation from Dinosaurs Rock at the end of the month.  http://dinosaursrockprograms.com/dinosaurs-rock-school-assembly/
