November 9-13
Science and Math
We are studying light waves and the light that is visible to humans (the color spectrum). Light waves carry heat energy from the sun. Each color in the spectrum has a different wavelength, and the shorter the wavelength, the more energy is transmitted in the same amount of time. Student teams covered flasks with a different colored paper, filled it with water and monitored it's temperature to see which colors heated up the fastest.
In this week's lab, students are learning how that heat energy helps plants produce food through photosynthesis.
In math we are doing coordinate planes and learning how to plot points with an x and y coordinate. Today the class played Battleship to practice plotting and finding coordinates.
Art
Staying on track with our Color exploration, I had the students make a more extensive color wheel including and introducing the tertiary or intermediate colors. Tertiary colors are made of colors made of full saturation of one primary color with 1/2 saturation of a secondary color. There are six tertiary colors.
Then it was time to create with our imaginations. The kids really loved this project and went all out! I had them design their own mystery plant! They each drew a pot and then created their own unique, beautiful, thoughtful, scary, colorful and super awesome plants that fruited amazing…. things! Sadie imagined a plant that grew s’mores! Jacks vicious plant had chains around its spiky limbs and sharp teeth! They were asked to illustrate what you would harvest as well as the mystery seed to their mystery plant. Three care instructions were also shared. They worked on this project on Friday during leadership class as well.
Movement
Oh man, this class was awesome. After a few light stretches I had the kids do a bit of circuit training. I had them do three set of: 10 jumping jacks, 10 squats (holding the last one for 5 counts), 5 bear crawls and 20 Russian kicks! They did all those exercises three times in a row! The groans! The ugh’s and ack’s!! Sofia asked if I was mad at them, lol. They definitely thought it was a bit torturous, but we were all impressed with getting through it. Together we are building strength and determination. Next was practicing headstands. After getting a proper set up, then it’s on to using core strength, focus, balance, changing perspective, let muscles, upper body strength. Lastly, we connected with our breath as I led them through a guided meditation.
Sewing
Throughout the week I had a chance to reinforce the looks that kids made. I will prep the looms and have them ready to weave by next week! Until then the kids really enjoyed some free choice sewing. Felt cubes were created as well as a little stuffed owl. Gifts were made on a whim for a few classmates as it was the last day for Violet and Camila. We wish them all the best in their next adventure and will miss them dearly. 💜💜💜
In place we warmly welcome Lyla Lou to our class.
Let’s keep the wet weather in mind when getting ready for school! Have a mask or two, please. Have a cozy change of clothes in your cubby, please. Thank you all! Here’s to another great week!
