There’s so much about December that inspires us in the ART room.. December symbolizes a new season, new landscapes, the holidays, family and the winter Solstice.  Yet, at Orchard school it is our time to rehearse, prepare and perform the annual Winter play.  December is also a shorter month due to the holiday break.  Not to mention 2 out of the 3 weeks of school we have Art class in the Tile room due to making space for the play.   And throughout the excitement and focus the kids were troopers going with the flow.  As for the play, the kids did an incredible job and was enjoyed by all!!! 

With all that being said, the 5th and 6th graders made the best of the situation by using the few weeks we had to make one spectacular piece of art.  This process was done in stages and put together at the last class before winter break. The first step was to create trees using scraps of tissue paper, collaged and placed by overlapping different colors of tissue paper to create different tones and shades. Next, we took inspiration from images of the Northern lights: the swirls, the colors, the softness and vastness of their phenomena.  The kids also had fun drawing portraits of polar bears.  They practiced in their art journals creating a polar bear by tracing their thumbs and also drawing one at a size of their choice.  Lastly it was time to put all the layers together to create a winter landscape filled with the magic of the holidays and the darkness of the Solstice.  The turnouts were breathtaking!

These turned out incredibly gorgeous and I couldn’t be more proud of my students.  They are incredibly creative!
