Language Arts

During the short and busy month of December, the 5/6 students focused on analyzing literature, wrote comics, and worked on spelling skills.

We are nearly done with our historical fiction novel, Sign of the Beaver. We found text evidence to support our analysis of the story’s theme and the two main characters.

In December, the kids practiced spelling and reviewed proper nouns with our thematic winter spelling words (winter, solstice, December, Kwanzaa etc). This practice was done in cursive, of course. 

The 5/6 students love their cursive books. Now that we have introduced all the letters, the children work at their own pace on grammar skills. As a whole group, we also do guided writing activities in our cursive books. The activities we did were Thank You Cards (which I hope made their way home!) and Character Sketches. We used the Character Sketch guide to create comics. This sparked a comic writing trend that continues today. 

Lastly, we held a Scrabble tournament. The children had a blast reinforcing their spelling and grammar skills (no proper nouns! no abbreviations!) and much debate was had on word choices and challenges.
