Leadership

The goal of the fifth/sixth grade leadership class is to promote and encourage leadership skills that build confidence and success in activities like group projects, team games and sports, and service to one's community.  Throughout the year, the students will work on team building with their peers, group and individual goal setting and decision making, communication skills, and community service to their school as well as the greater community in which we live. 

The students are developing their leadership skills daily as they take turns running our morning circle, participate in the care of our animals, and provide support for our school wide activities and events.  They did a great job of creating posters, recording sheets, and the thermometer  for our Drive for Schools fundraiser.  Currently, the students have been working on the Haunted Willows for our Halloween party by determining the mini vignettes, making a plan of action, listing props needed, and collaborating on the scripts for the tour guides.

Every Friday, the students have the opportunity to practice their leadership skills as they cooperate within a group to take care of the animals. The animal care has been divided into four categories with specific jobs in each: Alpacas, Pig, Chickens, and Manure. The students are in groups of 3 and each group is responsible for one of the categories. Cooperation is a key factor towards completing the jobs efficiently and thoroughly. They are already working like a well-oiled machine and are refining how they cooperate as a team.  A number of students created signs for the feed shed and everyone is helping to keep the contents of the shed clean and orderly.

For their community outreach, the students have expressed an interest in helping out at a soup kitchen.  In the next month or so, a decision will be made determining which place or places they will volunteer at.
