Math 3/4

The 3rd and 4th grade class has been getting a lot of work done these past few weeks. They are working hard to hone in their addition and subtraction skills with 3 or more digits, and are practicing regrouping (trading, borrowing) across zeros. For example, 1,000 - 569. They practiced using place value discs to visually see how the process works when you borrow from each of the place values and maintain the original number.  

They continued to practice calculating the Range, Median, Mode and Mean from a data set. They are also working on calculating multiple computations on their calculators. 

The class continued their geometry lessons and practiced naming, and drawing, a variety of shapes and angles. They studied the attributes of a variety of shapes, considering their number of sides, vertices and their angles, and what could be defined as Polygons, Quadrilaterals, and Parallelograms. They considered right, obtuse and acute angles as they compared angles and they learned about 360 degrees, 180 and 90 degree angles.  

This past week we began to dive into multiplication. The class discussed multiplication strategies and looked at how multiplication works. They considered grouping a number of objects as I presented word problems. They drew arrays ordering rows and columns as they played a dice game with partners, and visually say how squared numbers create a literal square on graph paper.. They practiced skip counting 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 10s as they watched “Multiplication Rock” for a fun visual of the multiples 2-12. They also learned how to use adding on strategies as they practiced some multiplied numbers. They will be continuing to learn and practice multiplication in the coming weeks.
