Science

Happy New Year!  In January the third graders have been focusing on preparing for the Science Fair!  As students work on developing their projects, the class is simultaneously practicing different parts of the scientific method (inquiry process) through exploratory activities.

Focusing on generating questions, student lab groups explored frozen water balloons and listed anything they wondered about them.  This led the class into an activity where the students learned which types of questions are considered testable, opinion, or research.

To practice identifying the variables in an experiment, students built gliders out of paper and straws.  After generating a list of independent variables , students then explored changing only one at a time to see how this affected their outcome (dependent variables).

Currently students are working to identify the independent and dependent variables in their experiment, incorporate variables into their hypotheses, and set up their experiments.  Students should be ready to begin running their tests and trials by the end of the week.

I hope to see you all at the Science Fair on February 28th!
