In early November, our field trip to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park kicked off our study of the Coastal Redwoods. Students learned about the Redwood habitat, history, physiology, and how the Coastal Redwood uses adaptations to survive. Students created a flip Redwood Tree Book with facts and drawings of each layer of the tree and forest.

Second graders are the Post Masters of the Orchard School Post Office. Students worked together to clean and prepare the post office and label each student’s individual post office box. Students will gather and deliver mail for the school throughout the year. Second graders are Penpals with the 5th and 6th graders and Big Buddies to the Kindergartners this year.

As part of our learning of indigenous culture, we read; Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message, by Chief Jake Swamp. Known as, The Thanskgiving Address this beautiful message is based on the Native American belief that the natural world is a rare and precious gift. After discussion and reflection, students wrote about what they are grateful for and created beautiful Grateful Heart Art to share.

Journal writing, penpal writing, reflections, and birthday celebration booklets were the focus of our writing in November.

Early December was dedicated to the The Wizard of Oz. We learned that L.Frank Baum wrote The Wizard of Oz as a series of 14 books over a century ago. We discussed literary elements and the author’s purpose. We listened to a shortened version of The Wizard of Oz, wrote about our favorite characters, drew maps of Oz Territory, and learned songs; including singing and signing, Somewhere Over The Rainbow .

December is a time for traditions, old and new! We learned about the history of the Christmas Tree aka the Evergreen and it’s symbolism throughout the ages.

During our last week of school, second graders participated in Elf Training. Elf training included completing an Elf Application, assessing Elf Jobs, consideration of ones talents and skills, spreading cheer, learning & singing holiday songs, making gifts, writing letters, and of course decorating Gingerbread Cookies. Thank you to all the parents who made delicious cookies for all of us to enjoy ~ Marine, Michelle, Kelsie and Elise! Students who complete and return the Elf Activity Booklet in January will recieve a special Elf trinket. Enjoy!
