Art/leadership

Welcome to Art! It is very exciting to be back in the art room with the students. I am honored to be in the classroom with this class three times a week. We have Art on Tuesdays, Leadership on Thursdays and Sewing elective on Fridays, for this quarter.

ART

So far, in the two classes we’ve had together, the students acclimated to the space with an introduction to their art journals and materials and review the class guidelines. After all the logistics, which is their favorite part, we dove right into our first fundamental: LINE. We enjoyed a quick review and started working on their first project in their art journals.

Leadership

In this class we will focus on mindful practices like centering, expressions of gratitude, movement and ways to help around campus and our local community. We reviewed the community spirit packet and will create a class contract to support as a reminder to the packet sent home. This is a great class and I look forward to hearing ideas on how the students would like to engage within the community at large as well as offer campus support. We will also incorporate our “give or get” practice where the students choose to receive a compliment or give a compliment. It’s a sweet activity the kids enjoy to feel good by making others feel good or by giving themselves permission to be praised. I will also begin reading a chapter book aloud as we will be together often. I’m thinking we’ll read The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill.

Sewing

I’m so excited to share my love for sewing with this sweet class! We’ve had time for a short introduction, free choice sewing as well as make stuffed apples with embroidered first initials on them and hung them on a branch I found so it looked like a bit of an Apple tree.
