First and Second Grade Language Arts
Toy Day - students learned about Toy History including the origins of the Teddy Bear, Mr. Potato Head, and Legos. Students shared their favorite toy with the class and explained why it was special to them.
Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy. We read an excerpt from Dr. King’s I have a Dream Speech and enjoyed the you tube video, The Story of Martin Luther King Jr. by Kid President. Students learned about characteristics that make a great leader.
Winter word play - We read the book “Snow Dancer,” by Addie Boswell, we enjoyed this delightfully playful book. We brainstormed snow related words and phrases and learned about incorporating onomatopoeia to create rhythm and imagery with words.
Poetry- Students are exploring poetry. Using the prompt “Know Me By The Way I,” students created a group riddle list poem about a found object. Can you solve these riddles?
Celebrating Chinese Lunar New Year - 2022 is The Year of The Tiger! Students learned about this important Chinese Cultural Celebration and their Chinese zodiac animal with associated characteristics.
Valentine’s Day Creations! Students created list poems, acrostic poems, and learned the elements of a Cinquain Poem - A five line poem using nouns, adjectives and verbs.
Creative Movement - Through structured improvisation students explore movement and gain tools for expression. Class is an extension of the Language Arts and students will incorporate verbs, adjectives, and adverbs as they choreograph their own movement phrases.
Presidents Day - Students learned many interesting facts about George Washington and Barack Obama. Ask your child to tell you about the symbols and meanings of “The Great Seal of the United States,” found on the back of the one dollar bill.
Students enjoyed “Of Thee I Sing", by Barack Obama. This book is a letter written to his daughters, highlighting characteristics of historical figures that inspire the potential within each of us.
As a culmination to Black History Month, students will learn about the origins of Jazz Music and how Improvisation and Democracy are alike - freedom, risk taking, cultural diversity, and creative collaboration. Our focus is on Louis Armstrong. Students will explore their voices as instruments through scatting - zit -zat - zoot - du - bop…oh yeah!
