April is Poetry Month and Earth Day ~ we are focusing on the power of words.
In the spirit of Earth Day, we are taking action and celebrating at home!
Students are learning about the power of words and making their voice heard.
3 ways to support the planet ~ In your packet this week you will find supplies to support their efforts!

1. Earth Day poster – create your own message or use a line from the list below. Make a beautiful poster to hang in your window. Double side it. Make more than one😊

2. Postcard to President Trump – create your favorite earth scene on one side and a simple, powerful message on the other…mail it to The White House! (practice sheet provided/stamps are peel -off)

3. Change for Change – We are adopting an Earth Friendly cause! Bring your change (pennies) to school and feed the Piggy Bank with the green ribbon on it! We are brainstorming organizations this week during our Zoom sessions and the 4/5’s will be narrowing down the list and selecting the organization(s).

Greta Thunberg - Greta began by protesting Swedish parliament in an effort to get them to do more to prevent climate change. She organized Fridays for Future, a school climate strike movement. As of 2019, more than one million students around the world participated in a multi-city coordinated protest for stronger action against climate change. Listen to her iconic UN Climate Summit speech.
Boyan Slat - At 16, during a fishing trip in Greece, Slat discovered massive amounts of plastic in the water. Two years later, the Dutch inventor launched his non-profit, Ocean Cleanup, to research using circulating currents to address the pollution issue.
Ryan Hreljac - Hreljac has been working to make clean water accessible to people in poor areas since he was six and first learned about the issue. He began by doing chores to earn money to send to organizations building wells in poor countries before starting Ryan's Well Foundation when he was 10. The charity has brought drinkable water to over 800,000 people in 16 countries.
Cassandra Lin - Lin's plan to save the world took shape when she was in fifth grade after learning that cooking oil could be turned into biofuel. She started small by convincing local restaurants in her community to donate their cooking oil waste to be recycled. As she expanded the program, her Project TGIF (Turn Grease Into Fuel) was officially off the ground. Her work has earned her several environmental awards.
