1st grade

Hi everyone, it was nice to connect with you all via zoom this past week. I loved hearing your compliments and getting to see you. This week, the work that went home was:

Practice drawing stars any way you like, can be six pointed, five pointed, four pointed, asterisk, etc. Ask family members how they draw stars. We will be drawing stars during our next zoom session.

Think about a minute. How long is a minute? What can you do in one minute? How many jumping jacks? Somersaults? Spins? Talk about it with your family. Make a list of things you can do in one minute.

Grow your number scroll. Emerie shared in our zoom session that she reached 700. Feel free to bring it when we meet on zoom and be ready to roll it out and show us the length.

Look at the hundreds grid I provided and complete the activity What Numbers Are Missing and Fill in the Pieces. If you want to go further with it, make up your own hundreds grid puzzle with the sheet I provided.

Max's family told me they had practiced doubling and dividing when cooking. This inspired me to include my waffle recipe. The recipe is enough for four people. Then, you can double it for many breakfasts, or halve it for just two children. Or, you can get really complicated like I do, and make 1 1/2 times the recipe.

Try Seeking Differences Practice I and II. If you like working with dice, try the game of How Many More to Make 8. In this game, you need a die and counters (can use pennies and nickels or dimes). Played by two people. First person rolls the die and gets a 1, must place a counter over the amount needed to make 8, 7. Next person, does the same. The goal is to get 3 in a row.

Hi! Fun getting to see you today. I was so excited to see your body measurements and some people sent me photos. If you send me a photo we could do some organizing of our data. Also, yay to Emma and Zola for sharing your number scrolls and achieving your goals. It was also great to see that you had worked on different ways to make 119 cents. I heard these 4 ways from students.

4 quarters 2 nickels 9 pennies

10 dimes 3 nickels 4 pennies

114 pennies1 nickel

2 quarters 5 dimes 2 nickels 9 pennies

Please feel free to scan and email me your results.

For this weeks curriculum that I sent home on Wednesday, here are the details:

Complete Equation Hunt I and II

Grow your number scroll, remember if your goal is penmanship, then focus on that. Writing fewer numbers but writing the best numbers you can, or getting them all facing the right direction, or practicing your pencil grip, or writing from sky to earth.

Look at the 100s chart and fill in the activity What Numbers are Missing and Fill In the Pieces. If you have a copier, please photocopy your hundreds chart as you will need at least two copies this week. I included blank number grid puzzles for you to create your own.

After our lesson on Monday, we will talk about how to create a hundreds chart pattern and what kind of clues to use on it.

If you would rather not make waffles, choose another recipe and practice doubling or halving the amounts. See you soon,

Kenza
