Math
Hi everyone. I miss you all and am excited for our next meeting, in the virtual or the real world. I created packets for you to bring home. Each packet includes a letter with some instructions.
1st grade
Play math games: Top It (war) or Addition Top It (instructions included), remember to remove the face cards from a pack of playing cards and to use the Ace as a 1. Let me know if you need a deck of cards. Not challenging enough, try playing Less Than You (each player turns over two cards, subtracts the lesser value from the greater, and the player with the lowest amount wins).
Number scrolls - please work on it. For some, the goal is number sense and place value. For others, it is fine motor control, neatness, writing from sky to earth. Use one continuing number scroll sheet from your packet to write on, and photocopy the other for extra sheets so you don't run out.
Work on the number 6. Tell your family a little old lady story as you write the number 6. Remember to draw her house, mailbox, washtub, and the mail truck for markers. Have everyone draw a number 6 drawing and talk about the number 6. Write down words to go with your story. Make sure you have it ready to share when we meet online next week.
Use the Judy clock to practice time. You have the times that Zariah and ChetanWin shared in their homework. Have a sibling or other family member quiz you on time to the half hour and hour and then trade.
Play Less or More - a new game to us from the Nimble with Numbers series. You must first cut out the spinner and use a pencil and the paperclip to spin on the gameboard. Use pennies and nickels or dimes as counters. You could extend the activity by counting the value of all the coins you have gathered to play.
I also included Seeking Sums worksheets.
Next week I am hoping to meet with your class. My goal is to host a sharing circle once or twice next week, as well as go over any questions, share your number scrolls and 6 drawings, and maybe have a lesson called Draw Me a Star.

2nd Grade
So…Last Friday was the 119th day of school. How many ways can you make 119 cents using pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills. Please record and have ready for when we share online next week. Remember, as many ways as you can think of, you are hoping to have ways that are different from anyone else.
Capture Two is a new game to us. It comes from the Nimble With Numbers book and for this game I would like you to use a pack of playing cards. Remove the face cards and use the Ace as a 1. The goal is to capture, or win, two cards that are two apart from each other.
Complete the Seeking Differences worksheets, also from Nimble With Numbers.
Complete the Measuring Body Parts investigation using the butcher paper and ribbon included in your packet. I would like you to use the ribbon to measure your foot, ankle, wrist, waist, forearm, and neck. One piece of ribbon for each body part. Glue the pieces of ribbon on your butcher paper starting at the line I drew. Label the ribbon by writing the name of the body part below the line. Then, use a tape measure to measure in inches and record. Measure in centimeters and record. We will be meeting online next week and sharing and comparing our findings as a group.
Number scroll - work on it, whether your individual goal is to reach 1,000, improve your penmanship, or practice pencil grip. Photocopy one of your two sheets so you have enough to keep going.
Ok, more next week. More activities, new things in store. Meet online, maybe have some sharing circles, times for questions, and a lesson.
