Last month our class focused on animal adaptations and how these are needed for survival. Lab teams played a few rounds of cold weather adaptations Memory to become more familiar with how animals survive in the winter. Students were then asked to select three adaptations from their Memory cards and design a completely new animal that depended on those adaptations for survival.

The class also learned that in winter, animals either hibernate, migrate, or adapt. We read stories about camouflage and migration and then each student created a bird feeder out of a repurposed milk carton.

In preparation for our field trip to the Seymour Center Discovery Lab, students learned about some of the interesting creatures that live in the ocean, and their adaptations for survival. 

The students’ biggest highlights from our trip were learning about the different animals, touching a variety of creatures, and seeing dolphins.

Of course the biggest highlight of all was petting a swell shark!

For the rest of February our main focus will be on the Invention Convention! Most of the work for this will be done in class over the next few weeks. We hope you will join us March 5th from 2:30 - 3:15 to see all the amazing projects that the students come up with.
