Happy New Year! In January the first graders explored many different mediums in their quest to answer the question “What is sound?”. Our unit started with a listening walk to identify the many sounds that can be heard around our campus. Through labs and sound stations, students were able to create vibrations and capture sound waves in a variety of ways. Some of our stations included string telephones, bouncing salt over a speaker on a stretched balloon (“Beat It” by Michael Jackson rendered the most exciting results), and rubber band instruments. Students also learned about the parts of the ear, and how we hear sounds.
Currently our class is exploring light. Students have tested many items to see what light will pass through, and they have practiced bending light to show all of its colors.
Coming up next week we will shift gears and begin to talk about inventions as we prepare for the Invention Convention on February 28.
