PUMPKINS!PUMPKINS!PUMPKINS!

Pumpkins took over and sparked all kinds of math activities during the week preceding Halloween.  Students created mind maps of a few things that were made of pumpkins.  We used their ideas to create a class map on the white board.  

As you can see, we also edited and rehearsed the song 'The Twelve Days of Halloween' so the students could perform it at the Halloween Party.  The students illustrated the song in art class with Valerie and I was amazed at their emotive creations.  

Brenda (Sadie's grandmother came in and helped us to predict how much each pumpkin weighed and measured.  Students then weighed their pumpkins in pounds and ounces, measured their circumference in inches, and recorded predictions and actuals.  The following day Amy (Ezra's mother) came in and helped us to scoop the seeds out of our pumpkins and carve them.  Lyla Lou, Leif, Solomon, and Ezra had the most seeds I have ever counted in a pumpkin at Orchard School:  1,100.  Ezra valiantly counted the last 100 seeds.

At home, practice counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, 100s whenever the opportunity presents itself.  Chloe loves to sing 2,4,6,8 who do we appreciate!
