Halloween Art

The second graders were lead through a ‘step-by-step’ art project using crayons and watercolor. With a tiny lesson on perspective, the kids drew their own expression of Witches Legs. The kids used crayon for the outline and watercolor paints for the detail of the witch and spider to use a watercolor resist technique.

I really loved how these turned out, very unique and creative!

Dia Del Los Muertos

In this class the kids drew their own calaveras (decorative skulls) to adorn our school’s Ofrenda (Altar of offerings). Every class created art to add to the Ofrenda, along with pictures of loved ones.

After all the festivities the second graders and I enjoyed creating birds with elaborate feathers. The kids used their experimental watercolor paper they created last month to cut and paste feathers on the bird they drew.

Autumn and Gratitude

i was very fortunate to have the second graders for two periods one Art day because the 5th/6th graders were on a field trip for the whole day. For our bonus Art project of the month was an ode to the Autumn season. The kids practiced lightly dabbing your paintbrush as opposed to strokes. How to use a brush to add texture. In this case, a forest of autumn trees. This project was completed with tempura paint and colored pencils on paper. *** pictures below!

Before the holiday break the whole school collectively created banner flags to express their gratitude. The installation was displayed by the cubbies, hung above the picnic tables. The kids illustrated and wrote what they were grateful for:

We also had a chance to thread beads to hang with the flags as colorful charms to beautify the expression.
