Language Arts
We are in full swing in the rug room. The children have been reading, analyzing, writing, exploring, and creating.
Since the last blog update, we wrapped up our Halloween activities. The children highlighted the lyrics of Ghost of John, cut them out, and placed them back in correct order. This was a fun challenge that had the children singing and reading to support the completion of this lesson. Later, they created a crayon and paint resist project to accompany the song's lyrics.
We also spent time comparing-we used our height, stories, animals, and pumpkins! The children spent time writing and organizing objects as we worked on the grammatical skill of superlatives (for example-big, bigger, biggest).
We have introduced all the magic c letters (c, a, o, d, g) and moved onto t. The children have been focused on those letter sounds and their formation. The children took home a "'Magic C' Game" sheet, I hope you enjoyed playing with your child at home.
Additionally, the children worked on a new poem, Thanksgiving Time. The kids focused on the High Frequency Words (HFWs) and, the, are and in. Further, we introduced the 'th' digraph (for example-thanksgiving and gathered). Along with the second graders, the children choreographed movements for each line of the poem. I hope you had a chance to see our performance of this poem at the morning circle before Thanksgiving break!
In class, we spent time building background knowledge for our trip to Wilder Ranch by discussing, writing, and organizing animals by size and habitat. We compared the vocabulary words and concepts of wild and domesticated animals. It was adorable to see the children light up with understanding of these words when our Wilder Ranch Interpreter used them during her presentation! The trip was quite a thrill!
Most recently, we read It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles G. Shaw. I recommend getting this book from the library or bookstore as it is a short and sweet and familiar read for your child. Help build their reading confidence with a text they read in class! This book uses a repetitive pattern to support reading acquisition. Also, we practiced reading the HFWs found in that story (look, but, it). The children created an art project based on the story, and wrote about their artistic visions in class.
