Math

We have gone full blast into using tally marks and incorporating various math and literacy skills. As a group, we created a graph of our pets.  

Then, students surveyed each other and recorded their findings on a t graph using tally marks. In a later lesson which incorporated probability, students rolled dice and recorded their rolls using tally marks. And finally, this past week in partnerships they played rock, paper, scissors and recorded outcomes using tallies. 

Remembering to go across on your fifth tally can be a challenge, so give them opportunities to practice at home when you need to count something. Also, have them try to read tally marks which represent an amount so they get used to the practice. Have patience.

During Harvest Festival week, we were lucky to have Brenda, Sadie's grandmother, and Pat, June's grandmother(2nd grade), help us with our Apple investigations and cooking. Students made predictions for their apples' weight and circumference, recorded these, then compared them with the apples' actual weight and circumference in oz and inches. They were so excited! Particularly to eat the apple once they had finished. 

The following day, with Grandma Pat and Manila's help, students cut and juiced apples and helped make delicious kale salad. It is amazing how capable and responsible they can be when using tools.
