We had a wonderful time in the Art room this past April. Every class was dedicated to creating with recycled materials in celebration of Earth day (everyday!).

The message and practice with each project was a reminder of this: Being mindful of how we use the materials we have, to invite extra creativity by using materials that are mostly considered trash, and most importantly, to honor the earth by creating less waste when we reuse materials.

For the first class I set up 3 stations for the kids to visit. One station was making magnets out of recycled medicine bottle caps.  They used the inside of the caps as mini frames to display little artworks made with pompoms and markers.  

The next station was beading and creating a collective art piece that now lives in the art room. We reused the beads that were used to decorate our gratitude flags back in November.  I found a bamboo stalk in the garden shed and we used it to hang our beaded strands. There’s room to add and I look forward to have the rest of the school participate.  The kids loved this station the most! I hope to bead with them again.

The third station was decorating popsicle sticks and was nott as popular, but hopefully we can revisit and create something fun. 

  Our second week was spent creating a classic Earth day project: A collage with cut out images from magazines.  The paper that the collages were made on were these old first printed (forest themed) sheets of paper that I found deep in the abyss of materials that live in the art room.  The instructions were to find three plants or flowers and three animals.

For our last week of Earth day projects I have each student a piece of styrofoam to use as a base to create a sculpture using beads, paper and pipe cleaners.  They loved beading so much, I thought they would enjoy using pipe cleaners instead of yarn for a less challenging beading experience.  They built up and out and created really unique structures, far different from the example I created.

In May we will cover as many Artists as we can! From classic to the current artists worldwide, we will cover their techniques and most famous art masterpieces.

Matisse, Georgia Okeeffe, Georges Seurat, Kris D, Patrick Dougherty, to name a few!!! I’m very excited to share some of the greatest inspirations  with your kids.
