Welcome to a new year in the art room! It is always exciting to start a new school year creating with the talented and unique students, old and new.
Before I begin, I would like to apologize for my infrequent presence this first month at school. In the first week of August, I was diagnosed with stage 1 Breast Cancer. It’s been the most challenging obstacle I’ve ever faced in my life! I was scheduled for my first surgery to remove tumor on September 13th. It was successful and the recovery time was restful and speedy, considering! They tested a few lymph nodes they removed and cancer was not present so I’m grateful to announce that I will not have to endure Chemo. However, I have another surgery scheduled this month, on the 11th, for the doctor to remove a little bit more tissue for safe measure. I will have to take off some more time off to allow myself the proper time to heal, again. I will be back in the classroom for Leadership on the 19th!! Hopefully, I’ll be back at work in full swing because there’s nothing more I enjoy than making art with your kids. I want to thank the teachers and subs for the support during my time in need. Thank you for letting me share. Know that all is well and I’ll be back in the classroom stronger and more inspired than ever!
That being said, I have little to share this first month in the Art room. The first day we discussed guidelines and introduced the classroom and all it has to offer. I had them do a little assessment practice by giving them each a piece of paper divided into 4 sections. Their name went in one section (Font), plant life in another (soft, curvy, wavy lines and shapes), a shelter or structure in the third section (straight, zig zag, shapes like squares, triangles and rectangles), and lastly, free choice (to see their individual relationship with their own creative art). We will do the same at the end of the year to identify the progress of their first year at school.

Yesterday we spent the class period working on our Art journals for the year. The focus was on the covers of the journals. Each journal opens flat so the back and front cover becomes one canvas. We will be incorporating many layers of different mediums, as well as enjoying filling in the pages with imaginative drawings as well as using it for a place to record step by steps.
When they felt complete for the day, they had a chance to help with the final steps of our Orchard Harvest Festival cook book! Your kids were able to apply color and vibrancy to the covers of the printed copies! make sure to grab one at the festival tomorrow.
