The fifth sixth grade is working in groups to solve complex math problems and complete multi-step tasks. When we baked for the Harvest Festival, they practiced measuring, fractions, reading recipes, and staying focused.

I think the biggest challenge, though, was keeping the students from eating the fruit tarts before serving them to the student body at the festival.

Geometry Books

This class is using a variety of strategies to solve problems with multiple steps and increasing their understanding of equivalence. They have started their geometry books and have used a straight-edge, a ruler, and a compass to draw constructions such as equal line segments, triangles, quadrilaterals, points of intersection. They have also practiced coordinate graphing. They continue to develop skills in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing and are beginning to solve one step linear equations with one variable.

Recording the Pumpkin Caper in Math Activity Books

The Apple Investigation and Pumpkin Caper are our two primary units in statistics. Before we start, we always make predictions of the data we will be collecting. We then collect and organize data that we have measured, weighed, and counted. From there the students determine the mean, median, mode and range and record all their data in their Math activity books.

Some Thursdays, we end the week with free choice math activities. This group is designing geometric figures using geo-boards.
