Hey everyone! What a busy 5 weeks we’ve had in the Art room since our return from winter break! We used all the time we had to create art for the Auction. We are complete, the art created for the Auction was received with praise and joy, and now we are ready to move forward with the curriculum and explore new projects. I’m excited!

The medium focused on the past month was block printing, well, at least our expression of block printing. Instead of carving on wood or rubber with cool, yet, sharp tools, we etched on foam boards for the same impression.

The kids drew (with lots of pressure with the pencil) on the foam to then roll ink with a brayer unto the handmade stamp to transfer the image. We made many proofs and created awesome, one of a kind prints. To warm up to the technique, I had the kids draw out a pattern using shapes and lines.

 The following week we agreed on a theme and picked nature to stay cohesive as a class for their art presentations. The 5th/6th grade class were also open to creating “treasure boxes” for this years school Auction and were able to decorate the lids with their prints. The kids really enjoyed this medium and hope to do real carving to create their stamps very soon. 

And now that the Auction is behind us we look forward to entering in the tenth annual “Doodle 4 Google” contest with the theme: What Inspires Me? And the kids are so excited and most of the class will be entering. We had an inspiring discussion on what inspired us, and how we like to express our inspirations! The contest entails doodling what inspires them in the google heading! Entry’s must be postmarked by March 2nd (so soon!!!)!!!!  We will spend every minute in class this week to finalize our entry forms and artist statements needed to complete to enter. The grand prize is a $30,000 college scholarship!!! A $50,000 Google for Education technology package for Orchard

and a behind the scenes experience at Google headquarters!!

One more thing, every kid that enters this contest MUST HAVE THEIR FORM SIGNED BY A PARENT!!!  This must be done by March 1st, so I can mail the forms on Friday, March 2nd- at the latest!! Maybe we can shoot for Wednesday afternoon? I’ll send out email reminder too!
