To begin the school year, we are becoming reacquainted with one another and the rug room. We began our Social Studies focus of U.S. History by examining the vocabulary words-migrate, immigrate, and emigrate. Below are photos and descriptions that highlight some of the activities from this past week.

The students completed a Book Hunt. This "scavenger-hunt" style activity was to familiarize the students with the location of books within the rug room's vast collection. Additionally, they  discovered books recommended by peers and teachers, and added books to their book bag for reading in the rug room.

To introduce our vocabulary words migrate, immigrate, and emigrate, the students worked in teams. Each team used a familiar vocabulary guide called a Cognitive Content Dictionary. To complete this guide, the students generate the following information about the vocabulary word:  the spelling of the word, a prediction of its meaning, a quick sketch of that prediction, and finally look up its definition in a dictionary. Lastly, the groups presented their findings to their peers.
