Dia Del los Muertos  

The students had another opportunity this year to paint a calavera (decorative skull) on a river stone to place on our schools ofrenda (offerings, Altar).  They also painted marigolds on rocks.  Marigolds are traditionally used to decorate the Ofrendas to attract the spirits with their color and scent.  As I have the 5th/6th graders for first period, they prepare the first stages of our Altar.

It’s always an honor to create this beautiful space with the students.  I love when we create collectively.  

The week after we stepped away from holiday mode and made sweet, abstract peacocks by collaging watercolor paper the students painted and created last month.  The kids cut out feathers big and small, thin or full and were free to create their bird any size and color.

On the last Wednesday  before Thanksgiving break the 5th/6th graders went on their fantastic field trip to visit the Lady Washington and enjoyed a morning out on sea and the afternoon in Monterey.  

Before the holiday break the whole school collectively created banner flags to express their gratitude. The installation was displayed by the cubbies, hung above the picnic tables.  The kids illustrated and wrote what they were grateful for:

Trees

Brothers

Electronics

Stars

You

Me

Love......to name a few. 

We also had a chance to thread beads to hang with the flags as colorful charms to beautify the expression. 

Luckily I managed to have the 5th/6th graders to create their gratitude flag to be able to share what they are thankful for.

The students were all very pleased with how the flags turned out.  I hope you all had a chance to visit.
