Third and Fourth Grade Language Arts –
It’s been a busy start to the year! We began the year by getting to know one another through National and International holidays, reading, writing, and art. We also created our classroom agreements and guidelines for the Rugroom and the loft.
International Roald Dahl Day - September 13th
Author study - Roald Dahl/Modern Fairy Tales/Fantasy. Students are learning about Roald Dahl’s unique sense of humor and engaging writing style through George’s Marvelous Medicine. Students are focusing on story elements, plot, and increasing their vocabulary with this outrageous story of a boy, his grandmother, and magic. Students will create their own spells and potions as an extension into Halloween activities and Halloween skit.
Students are also exploring Quentin Blakes drawing style and creating their own characters for fun.
International Dot Day – September 15th
We read The Dot, by Peter Reynolds. It is the story of a teacher who encourages a student to “make her mark” and so they did!
International Day of Peace - September 21st
We read Imagine, by John Lennon and did a short meditation on creating peace within. Students drew pictures and described where they find peace. If you want to live in a peaceful world – start within.
National Indigenous Day – October 11th
We read Brother Eagle, Sister Sky – Chief Seattle’s message of interconnectedness and the importance of taking care of Mother Earth. First spoken in 1850, his message is especially relevant today. We will be referring to this message throughout the year and discovering how we can help take care of the earth and make a difference.
Back to School Night – October 12th
Students created self-portraits in the style of Amedeo Modigliani and created descriptive poems using the prompt Know Me By The Way I.
We hope you enjoyed guessing your child’s portrait and reading their poetic clues.
If there is one thing to take away from Back to School Night it is to please – Read, Read, Read– 20 minutes every night.
The Loft is Open! Students can use the loft during D.E.A.R. - Drop Everything And Read and also during recesses.
Halloween Fun with Potions and Spells – students have been exploring using descriptive language and creating frightful and delightful spells and potions. Some of the potions were incorporated into our skit for the Halloween Celebration.
Something Wicked This Way Comes!!!! Students toiled and toiled to create their “Potions and Spells Skit!” We incorporated their numerous talents and skills including; juggling, pogo-sticking, singing, choral chanting, and writing lots of rhyming spells. We hope you enjoyed the show!!
