Science

For the beginning of the year, our focus in science has been mainly on familiarizing ourselves with different forms of measurement tools and how to use them as scientists.

In science class, students usually work in teams or with a partner. So, our class has also been working through several team building challenges that help build communication and collaboration skills. A few of their favorites were the partner challenges Meet a Tree, and Sherman’s Tank.

Measuring Length

  • Measurement scavenger hunt- students searched the campus for objects that match a list of given lengths.

  • How Do I Measure Up Lab- Students measure themselves (ex. head circumference, arm length) at the beginning of the year, and compare it to the same measurements again in June.

Measuring Liquid Volume

Using different volume measurement tools, students strived to get just the right amount of each color into their test tubes. If they followed directions carefully, a rainbow appeared.

Mass

Students used triple beam balances to find the mass of a tray full of toys, as well as candy corn on Halloween.
