Math

Hi everyone, it was really nice getting together curriculum for all of you and thinking how best to support you during this week, although it is much nicer being with you in person. I hope you have picked up your materials or are planning to do so tomorrow. I will basically go over the activities and expectations in this post, just as I did in the letter I included in your packets. Please have fun with all of this, get your families involved, and keep learning. Feel free to take some of the activities from the other grade if they interest you or you would like more work. Also, let me know if you would like to pick up your number scroll and some continuing number scroll sheets. Feel free to email me with questions, feedback, requests. Next week, I am hoping to schedule some meeting times over zoom, to hold some sharing circles, maybe a reading time, a class time for questions, sharing findings, and presenting array riddles from our homes.

2nd Grade

So…Last Friday was the 119th day of school. How many ways can you make 119 cents using pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills. Please record and have ready for when we share online next week. Remember, as many ways as you can think of, you are hoping to have ways that are different from anyone else.

Capture Two is a new game to us. It comes from the Nimble With Numbers book and for this game I would like you to use a pack of playing cards. Remove the face cards and use the Ace as a 1. The goal is to capture, or win, two cards that are two apart from each other.

Complete the Seeking Differences worksheets, also from Nimble With Numbers.

Complete the Measuring Body Parts investigation using the butcher paper and ribbon included in your packet. I would like you to use the ribbon to measure your foot, ankle, wrist, waist, forearm, and neck. One piece of ribbon for each body part. Glue the pieces of ribbon on your butcher paper starting at the line I drew. Label the ribbon by writing the name of the body part below the line. Then, use a tape measure to measure in inches and record. Measure in centimeters and record. We will be meeting online next week and sharing and comparing our findings as a group.

Number scroll - work on it, whether your individual goal is to reach 1,000, improve your penmanship, or practice pencil grip. Photocopy one of your two sheets so you have enough to keep going.

3rd grade

Weekly challenges, here we go. Who can find more than word to answer challenge number 2? Is there more than one way to solve challenges 4 and 5?

Review your multiplication tables: x 2, x 5, and the squares.

In your packets, I included a board game I created, play it. Create your own version on the other side. Go further and make board games based on other skills. Create as a family, and then play each others'. We can share with each other next week online.

Color the multiplication coloring sheets I provided to unearth the design below. First complete the times tables and then use the multiples to color in the other side of the sheet.

Find arrays in your home. Remember candy box research? What do you have in your house that comes in an array. At school, we buy toilet paper that comes in packages of 48. How could it be arranged? (Hint, there is a trick in this one) Record your arrays and be ready to present as a math riddle for your classmates.

Find the number of hours and minutes between sunrise and sunset for Wednesday, March 19th and record on the provided sheet. Sunrise was at 7:11 am and sunset was at 7:18 pm. If you like, look it up for the following days, Thursday sunrise at 7:10 am to 7:19 pm. Interesting to see the daily pattern.
