Art
Happy New Year! It’s good to be back at school after a wonderful winter break.
For the month of January we’ve only had one day in the art room together. We’ve had two Mondays off this month and Rosy has to sub for me one Monday as well. Luckily, I subbed in the Tile room one day and squeezed in an extra day of Art with the kids.
For the time we were together we experimented with Contour Line drawing, Blind Contour drawing as well as Continuous Line drawing. Along with studying the subject drawn, practicing patience and trying hard to not peek at your paper or not lifting your pencil, we discussed scale and efficiently using the space your canvas offers. They weren’t sure how they felt about the outcomes and I tried to assure them that Blind Contour Line drawing is meant to look funny, a bit skewed and very abstract…..and those are great reasons to love art!
Doodle for Google
We’ve started drawing on the Google logo and most students in this class are interested in entering the national contest held by Google called Doodle for Google. The challenge is to illustrate the theme on and around the logo. This years theme is “I show kindness by…” I’ll post pictures as soon as the kids feel complete with their entries.
Chinese New Year
The kids explored painting with sumi ink and did a step by step on a drawing of a cute mouse under a cherry blossom tree in honor of the year of the Rat. We also used the ink to write the Chinese character for Rat with swift brush strokes.
Next up: Alma Thomas, Auction art and Valentine art.
