We had a wonderful time in the Art room this past April. Every class was dedicated to creating with recycled materials in celebration of Earth day (everyday!).

The message and practice with each project was a reminder of this: Being mindful of how we use the materials we have, to invite extra creativity by using materials that are mostly considered trash, and most importantly, to honor the earth by creating less waste when we reuse materials.

On the first week the class made their own paintbrushes by fringing an end of a used toilet paper roll. After cutting the toilet paper roll they flattened the fringe to create a blossom. Like this:

By dabbing the fringe end into paint, the kids were able to make beautiful flower, like this:

It was fun to experiment and explore! 

The week after, the kids were at Pigeon Point! Luckily, I meet with them for Leadership on Fridays so we were still able to create our next project. The kids created a multimedia art piece of a cityscape using acrylic and newspaper. The first stage of this project was to paint a sky at dusk and practice value with a monochromatic color scheme. While the paint dried, we moved on to creating the buildings used for the cityscape.  From pages of local newspapers the kids cut out tall and short buildings and structures to arrange on their sunset skyline.  We talked briefly on depth as they strategically placed their buildings across their canvas. They were then glued on to place then outlined with Sharpie to clearly see where the buildings. began and ended.  Lastly, using the tips of recycled bamboo skewers, the kids dotted a few stars and constellations for the final touch. These came out great! It’s truly magical what the kids can create in one class period! I’m proud of their focus and determination.

For the last project of the month, the artists made a simple collage of a cat created with magazine pages.  Again, these proved to make unique pieces of artwork. Using recycled materials is a creative way to make a piece of art that is close to impossible to recreate.

In May we will cover as many Artists as we can! From classic to the current artists worldwide, we will cover their techniques and most famous art masterpieces.

Matisse, Georgia Okeeffe, Yung Jake, Georges Seurat, Kris D, Patrick Dougherty, to name a few!!! I’m very excited to share some of the greatest inspirations  with your kids.
