Leadership
Greetings! Since winter break we’ve used our time meeting for leadership as more time to create for the Auction. The past two weeks we’ve gotten back on course with our curriculum. I was so appreciative for all their hardwork and energy they put in for the Auction. They did a great job working together as a class and made incredible art. **please read my art blog to hear more about our experience.
To reconnect we talked a little on Black history month and discussed the purpose and importance. That led to talking about equality and justice for all. We talked about similarities and differences and if we are able to learn from each other, the easier it is to be kind and empathetic, because we are more alike then different. So in order to learn more about each other we did a simple exercise where we all stood in a circle. You would step forward if you related with what I called out....
”Do you celebrate your birthday in the summer?”
”Did your birthday fall on a school day?”
”Step forward if you have blue eyes”
“Did you feel hurt by someone else this week?”
A lot of kids stepped forward, including me! We took a long look...and stepped back.Then I asked:
”How many of you were able to resolve what caused the pain?”
When most of us stepped forward again, some kids couldn’t believe their friends could potentially still be hurting. We sat down to reflect. We took that moment to talk about empathy and how that practice can be used as a reminder to be kind, gentle and to ask if a friend is ok once in a while.
We stood up again and joined hands. We acknowledged each other and sent energy around the circle by squeezing each other’s palms one at a time.
With that we talked about Random acts of Kindness to spread cheer!! To give encouragement! To be of service and to give a helping hand. It was an impactful class and full of understanding.
Yesterday we took an out breath class to create a Gratitude banner for our “Appreciation to the donors that made our auction a success” photo coming soon! The kids worked together and designed and painted harmoniously. And most importantly they had fun doing so.
