Well, we didn’t exactly get into Monochromatics the way I thought we would have time for....not in October, with Halloween, Dia de Los Muertos and the party to prepare for! What was I thinking? 

It was so great working on ‘Popcorn’ with the 3rd graders! We had so much fun preparing and performing at the Halloween party!  I’ve actually never directed a play before, but the story has been a favorite with the kids for a few years now, so they really pulled it off on their own! I think everyone enjoyed the easy process and storyline. I hope you all enjoyed it too!  

For Dia Del Los Muertos, the class create their own drawings of a Calavera (skull) that we strung together to create a cool banner to display on the Alter we created as s school.

Our main subject, aside from Holiday creations, was to review *Lines, Patterns and Shapes, all the variations, combinations and usage to create texture, tone and overall unique pieces of art.

After a solid practice with a homemade worksheet, I had the kids create a multilayered landscape with ink and chalk pastel. We began by creating a border around our canvas by taping down the perimeter with masking tape and carefully taking it off after the masterpieces were complete. This helps the viewer focus on the center of art piece, also gives the art a nice professional finish.  I had them fill in each layer with beautiful patterns and shapes with fine tip sharpies. To add color, I demonstrated how to blend different colors, how to simply dab in color in a few areas to create lighter tones and how to make bold and bright shades by filling in with more chalk. These turned out awesome!! Vibrant and sharp, yet soft and dreamy.
