Welcome to a new year in the art room! It is always exciting to start a new school year creating with the talented and unique students, old and new.
Before I begin, I would like to apologize for my infrequent presence this first month at school. In the first week of August, I was diagnosed with stage 1 Breast Cancer. It’s been the most challenging obstacle I’ve ever faced in my life! I was scheduled for my first surgery to remove tumor on September 13th. It was successful and the recovery time was restful and speedy, considering! They tested a few lymph nodes they removed and cancer was not present so I’m grateful to announce that I will not have to endure Chemo. However, I have another surgery scheduled this month, on the 11th, for the doctor to remove a little bit more tissue for safe measure. I will have to take off some more time off to allow myself the proper time to heal, again. I will be back in the classroom for Leadership on the 19th!! Hopefully, I’ll be back at work in full swing because there’s nothing more I enjoy than making art with your kids. I want to thank the teachers and subs for the support during my time in need. Thank you for letting me share. Know that all is well and I’ll be back in the classroom stronger and more inspired than ever!
That being said, I have little to share this first month in the Art room. The first day we discussed guidelines and took a tour of the classroom. We also got the creative juices flowing by illustrating our favorite memory of summer vacation.
Last Monday I was able to come teach for the day, which I was grateful for as I was scheduled to start on a later date! I was so happy to return to help with the Harvest Festival planning. The kids created fabulous drawings using colored pencils, microns, oil pastels and chalk pastels of root vegetables growing in the soil as well as other plant life growing above ground. They also added insects, different sky features and other magical garden elements. These came out great and will be displayed at the Harvest Festival this week.
The 3rd graders also helped with adding detail to the Harvest Festival banners we created in the 4th/5th/6th grade class. They also worked hard at creating illustrations that will be featured in the Harvest Festival cookbooks. These cook books are collectively made by all the students at Orchard. After all, it takes a lot of effort and many hands to create, edit, illustrate and decorate a cook book in two days!
Today we reviewed Color: primary colors, secondary colors, warm and cool, complementary colors and what ROYGBIV stands for (the B and I can get confusing!).
When I come back from my next leave of absence, we will study monochromatic, tints and shades. We will also get into some Halloween inspired art projects and hopefully help make the Haunted Willows spookier than ever!
